Saint Raphael, Archangel

The second in a series of the three archangels, Saint Raphael shares the angelic attributes of ribbons that denote he always hears the word of God, as well as the orb with a monogram of the name of Christ. Portraits of the archangels always point to Christ. In addition Raphael’s distinct characteristics are the pilgrim’s staff and the fish, here represented on his stole, that are allusions to his role in the Book of Tobit. The wings are a symbol of his spiritual nature and the ring on his left hand is symbolic of his role as a patron saint of marriage.
