Saint Michael the Archangel

Armed and ready to defend us against the wickedness and snares of the devil. This work was designed to show a strong Michael, prince of the heavenly host. Its’ design draws on many elements of traditional iconography. The ribbons swirling around his ears tell us that he always hears the word of God. The sleeve of his outer garment is decorated with a stylized balance scale, a reference to Michael’s traditional role as a weigher and escort of souls. The sleeve of the under tunic shows a red dragon, an allusion to Michael’s battle with satan, the great dragon. In traditional icons, images of the archangels always point back to Christ, that is accomplished here with the inclusion of the Greek abbreviation for Jesus Christ seen in his halo. The armor and sword are traditional attributes in token of his role as leader of the army of God. And although scripture never mentions God’s messenger’s as having wings they are included as a sign of his spiritual nature.

A print of this painting may be purchased in our printshop.
